Layer 1: Kasina Meditation

Names: Pāli kasiṇa
Objects: earth, water, fire, air, blue, yellow, red, white, light, limited space in later Theravāda systematization.

Classical procedure

Prepare or locate a simple visual object corresponding to the chosen kasina.
Gaze steadily while mentally noting its concept/name.
Close the eyes and reproduce the mental image.
Refine the internal counterpart sign (paṭibhāga-nimitta).
Expand or stabilize that sign as a basis for absorption.

Layer 2: Gengshen Vigil

Chinese: 守庚申 shou gengshen
On sexagenary-cycle Gengshen nights, practitioners stayed awake to prevent the Three Corpses from leaving the body to report faults to heaven.

Historical form

Keep vigil through the night; engage in recitation, social observance, abstinence or religious practice; avoid sleep until the dangerous period passes.

The practice also spread beyond Daoism into East Asian popular religion.

Salt is used at entrances, funerary returns, sumō, restaurants and ritual spaces as an apotropaic/purifying substance.

Formal shrine use should be distinguished from popular customs such as morijio.

Layer 4: Conch-Shell Trumpet

Japanese: 法螺貝 horagai
Yamabushi use conch trumpets to signal in mountains and ritually mark procession, invocation and sacred space. Melodic codes differ by lineage.

Authorization: PRIESTLY / LITURGICAL

Function

To announce a ceremony, state its purpose, specify its program, name sponsors, confess faults, request aid or report ritual action to the celestial administration.

Petition preparation

Identify the correct divine office/recipient.
Identify the sponsor/client/community.
State the ritual purpose.
Compile names and necessary personal/community data.
Draft the memorial in the required liturgical formula.
Authenticate it with priestly titles, seals or registers where prescribed.

Ritual dispatch

Purify the priest and altar.
Present the memorial formally before the altar.
Announce/read the document according to the liturgy.
Invoke the celestial messengers or internal gods responsible for carrying it.
Dispatch the document, commonly through ritual burning where the tradition calls for fire transmission.
Visualize/understand it as entering the celestial bureaucracy.
Continue the main rite whose purpose the memorial announced.

Closing

Receive/ritually acknowledge celestial response where the liturgy provides one; dismiss officials; close altar and retain/archive or burn documents according to genre.

Learning

Traditional priestly training is required because correct recipient, bureaucratic rank, seals, document format and dispatch liturgy are all essential.

Layer 6: Tantric Initiatory Secrecy

Who: Initiates and outsiders
Certain tantric manuals explicitly prohibit revealing maṇḍala secrets, mantras or instructions to persons who have not entered the maṇḍala.

Ritual consequence language

Some texts threaten degeneration of samaya, hell rebirth or other severe karmic consequences for disclosure.

Research rule

The existence of a published translation does not erase the historical secrecy rule. Record both facts.
