Relationship to bugang
Section titled “Relationship to bugang”Yubu is an older sacred gait associated with Yu the Great. Later Daoist ritual frequently absorbs or identifies it with forms of bugang.
Procedure grammar
Section titled “Procedure grammar”- Identify the exact yubu text or ritual in which the gait occurs.
- Purify and orient the ritual area.
- Take the transmitted opening posture.
- Execute the asymmetric/alternating sacred stepping pattern exactly as transmitted.
- Coordinate steps with the text’s breath, incantation, talismanic or directional actions.
- Use the gait to cross, establish or transform ritual space.
- Continue into the rite for which yubu is functioning as the approach or cosmological movement.
- Conclude according to that manual.
How to learn
Section titled “How to learn”Because descriptions differ across centuries, learn a specific Yubu rather than “the Yubu.” Comparative research should chart early fangshi examples, Six-Dynasties texts and later Zhengyi/Thunder-Rite adaptations separately.
