- avoiding expenditure of vital essence;
- avoiding blood-containing foods for sensual pleasure;
- avoiding pursuit of fame/status;
- not forgetting Daoist law;
- not studying heterodox writings;
- restraint of the senses;
- humility;
- deliberation before action;
- avoiding luxury in clothing/food;
- avoiding aggressive self-assertion;
- avoiding invocation/worship of unauthorized ghosts and spirits;
- avoiding delight in warfare.
