The canonical text’s transmitted list includes:
- wild goose / goose (鴈);
- eel (鰻);
- turtle (龜);
- one fish/reptile graph transmitted corruptly or ambiguously in some electronic editions;
- black carp (黑鯉);
- another eel/fish category transmitted with variant/corrupt characters in modern electronic copies;
- raw scallion/onion (生蔥);
- chives (韭);
- garlic (蒜);
- coriander/cilantro (荽);
- beef/cattle (牛);
- dog (犬).
Japanese transmission
Section titled “Japanese transmission”A later Japanese Chintaku Reifu tradition preserves the clearer list:
- goose;
- turtle;
- beef;
- dog;
- eel;
- soft-shelled turtle;
- black carp;
- loach.
This makes it likely that at least some of the unclear Chinese electronic characters reflect textual/transcription corruption rather than genuinely different animals.
