Copying scripture is simultaneously textual transmission, merit-making, meditation and offering.
Common Japanese procedure
Section titled “Common Japanese procedure”Purify hands/mouth; settle the body; sometimes copy a model character-by-character with brush and ink; add a dedication or aspiration; offer the finished copy at a temple or keep it respectfully.
Kōyasan currently offers Heart Sūtra copying as a religious practice.

Cosmology

- Visualize the Northern Dipper descending above the head.
- Stabilize the image of its stars.
- Visualize the Three Ones emerging among the Dipper stars.
- Take the first of three breaths and visualize one One descending to its assigned Cinnabar Field.
- Take the second breath and guide the second One to its field.
- Take the third breath and guide the third One to its field.
- Visualize all Three Ones established simultaneously in their upper, middle and lower residences.
- “Guard” or preserve their presence through stable concentration.
- Conclude by allowing the visualization to settle without abruptly dispersing attention.
Learning

- Memorize their appearances, colors and names.
