The first shrine visit of a newborn marks the end of a taboo period.
Common timing recorded
Section titled “Common timing recorded”- approximately day 32 for a boy;
- approximately day 33 for a girl.
Regional variation
Section titled “Regional variation”The first visit can occur as early as day 7 or later than 100 days.
Procedure
Section titled “Procedure”- Observe the local postpartum/newborn avoidance period.
- Determine the shrine and regional timing.
- Prepare infant and family.
- Visit the tutelary shrine after the taboo period ends.
- Present the child to the ujigami.
- Receive blessing/prayer according to the shrine.
- Return to ordinary community religious participation.
Research caution
Section titled “Research caution”The source documents a newborn taboo period, but should not be used to invent a universal doctrine that mother and infant are “unclean” for a fixed number of days across all Japan.
