When no living teacher can be found:
- Establish the oldest manuscript witnesses.
- Compare recensions.
- Translate technical verbs literally before interpreting them.
- Build an inventory of every object, person, direction, color, number, mantra and action.
- Draw a ritual-flow diagram.
- Separate preparation, invocation, main operation, application, dismissal, and dedication.
- Mark lacunae rather than filling them creatively.
- Compare parallel ritual manuals from the same corpus.
- Consult archaeology/iconography for implements and maṇḍala form.
- Reconstruct only safe physical actions.
- For toxic, medically dangerous, incendiary or violent elements, preserve the historical description and use inert substitutes in demonstrations.
- Label the result scholarly reconstruction, not lineage practice.
