Typical ritual structure

- Invite devas to hear the Dhamma in some liturgical traditions.
- Recite selected protective suttas.
- A cord may connect the reciters to a vessel of water and/or participants.

- Merit and blessings are dedicated.

Purpose
Section titled “Purpose”To renew the covenant/bond between a community and its gods.
Organization
Section titled “Organization”- Community representatives/lay association commission the rite.
- A daoshi convenes assistants.
- Determine duration, commonly one, two, three, five or ten days according to scale.
- Prepare extensive paperwork well in advance.
- Prepare temple ritual space and the parallel public festival.
Ritual architecture
Section titled “Ritual architecture”- Purify officiants and altars.
- Establish sacred space and divine seats.
- Invite the celestial powers.
- Submit memorials announcing purpose, sponsors and program.
- Present offerings.
- Recite scriptures/liturgies.
- Perform pacing, seals, music or other lineage-specific operations.
- Maintain the distinction between public sections and closed priestly sections.
- Outside, the community may conduct processions, music, theatre and the circulation of the local tutelary god.
- Complete petitions/thanksgiving.
- Send off the invited gods.
- Close and dismantle the temporary sacred arrangements.
