Operational meaning
Section titled “Operational meaning”The mandalas are not wall decoration. Japanese Esoteric practice combines meditation on the mandala with mudrā and mantra under a teacher.
Ritual installation
Section titled “Ritual installation”- Purify the ritual hall.
- Install the paired mandalas in the orientation specified by the school and ceremony.
- Establish the altar and ritual implements.
- Place offerings and incense.
- Enter through the ceremony’s preliminary purification/empowerment sequence.
- Contemplate Dainichi at the center of the appropriate world.
- Establish the surrounding assemblies.
- Perform mudrā.
- Recite mantra.
- In initiation, follow the transmitted entry/affinity/consecration sequence.
- Move between the doctrinal/ritual meanings of the two worlds as instructed.
- Close the ceremony through the school’s formal sequence.
Visual variants
Section titled “Visual variants”Deities may appear:
- anthropomorphically;
- as ritual attributes;
- as Sanskrit seed syllables. Do not assume these are interchangeable without the relevant ritual commentary.
