Setting: especially Shangqing subtle physiology
Shangqing sources divide the brain into nine sacred palaces populated by deities. These became a durable feature of Daoist internal geography.
Ritual use
Section titled “Ritual use”The palaces serve as sequential or correlated visualization stations. A practitioner mentally locates a palace, installs or recognizes its deity, recites names/formulas where supplied, and integrates the cranial palace network with the rest of the divine body.

In some lion-kagura traditions the lion head itself functions as shintai. Purification and prayer can be performed by shaking/moving the lion head over or toward recipients. Yamabushi-associated forms preserve mountain-ascetic ritual elements.
