Ritual logic
Section titled “Ritual logic”Negative astral influence is not merely “predicted”; it can be ritually addressed. The canonical text teaches dhāraṇī recitation together with offerings directed toward the grahas so that harmful influence is pacified and favor gained.
Historical structure
Section titled “Historical structure”Prepare offerings → invoke the relevant Buddhist sacred authority → recite dhāraṇī → present offerings to the nine grahas → request pacification/protection → dedicate.

Setting: Shangqing
Twenty-four luminous gods are arranged as three groups of eight and connected with the Three Pure Ladies. They participate in undoing the “mortal knots” inherited with embodied existence.
Practice structure
Section titled “Practice structure”Visualize the prescribed luminous gods in their bodily locations; recognize their governing female divinities; invoke their radiance; use their presence as a means of loosening the knots tying the adept to mortality.

The older ritual logic is more elaborate than “sprinkling hot water.” A cauldron stands before the altar; steam rises in a sacralized space; a miko or specialist manipulates bamboo grass in the boiling water; continuous ritual activity may induce kamigakari; the possessed medium then delivers takusen. Later forms shift emphasis toward purification, exorcism and dance.
