Historical alchemy compounded mineral and metallic substances to create elixirs of transcendence.

Specialist scholarship on the Book of the Nine Elixirs identifies:

  1. master-to-disciple transmission,
  2. establishment of ritual area,
  3. choice of auspicious time,
  4. compounding/refining the elixir,
  5. offering to the gods,
  6. ingestion.

Cinnabar, mercury, lead and sulfur appear in major historical systems.

Hazard: VERY HIGH. Mercury, arsenic compounds and other alchemical substances caused historical poisonings and deaths. This encyclopaedia documents the ritual chemistry but does not convert poisonous recipes into modern dosage instructions.

Tradition: Tianshi Dao / Celestial Masters

Early Celestial Masters could interpret illness as related to moral fault rather than only demons or elemental imbalance.

Ritual sequence reconstructed from the institutional pattern

Section titled “Ritual sequence reconstructed from the institutional pattern”
  1. The afflicted person identifies/confesses faults.
  2. Repentance is formally expressed.
  3. The officiant prepares petitions describing the fault, confession, repentance and requested aid.
  4. Separate or appropriately addressed petitions are directed to the Officers of Heaven, Earth and Water.
  5. The petitions are ritually transmitted through the priestly bureaucracy.
  6. The client undertakes the moral correction/observance required by the community.
  7. Healing is sought as restoration of moral and celestial order.

Study Celestial Masters liturgical manuals and Terry Kleeman’s historical reconstruction, then distinguish early forms from later Daoist healing rites that add exorcistic or tantric technologies.
