Japanese star mandalas were developed by at least the tenth century for rites addressing natural calamity, epidemic disease and longevity.

  2. Second circle: Big Dipper stars.

  4. Zodiacal signs are integrated into the astral assembly.
  5. Fifth circle: Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions.
  6. Outer system: Thirty-Six Calendric Animals paired with Thirty-Six Celestial Guardians.
  1. Calculate/select the astral rite appropriate to the calendrical danger or desired benefit.
  2. Purify and establish the altar.
  3. Install the correct star mandala.
  4. Establish offerings/lights/incense according to the manual.
  5. Invoke the central Golden-Wheel Buddha.
  6. Invoke/contemplate the Dipper.
  7. Establish the Nine Luminaries.
  8. Establish zodiacal and lunar-mansion powers.
  9. Recite the relevant astral mantra/dhāraṇī.
  10. Present the petition/aspiration for calamity-aversion, epidemic protection or longevity.
  11. Perform any star-specific offerings/repetition counts required by the manual.
  12. Dedicate and dismiss.

Astral rites require both Mikkyō liturgy and calendrical/astrological competence. Do not infer a ritual solely from the painted circles.
