Text: The Ritual Dhāraṇī “The Essence of Dependent Arising” (Toh 519)
This source is unusually valuable because it explicitly gives a basic ritual algorithm and then numerous applications.
Basic rite
Section titled “Basic rite”- Generate bodhicitta, the mind of awakening.
- Speak words of truth, establishing truthful ritual speech.
- Take refuge in the Three Jewels and the awakened beings named by the rite.
- Recite the Sanskrit ye dharmā dependent-arising formula.
- Visualize the perfect form of the Buddha in the palm of the hand.
- Maintain the visualization while reciting.
- For a particular application, consecrate the object or medium specified by that section of the manual through the required repetitions.
- Deploy that consecrated medium in the manner prescribed.
- Close with the intended compassionate aspiration and dedication.
Learning
Section titled “Learning”This is one of the best primary texts for understanding how a dhāraṇī is operationalized. A researcher should first master the basic sequence above, then catalogue each application separately. Where an application uses unsafe historical substances, study it textually rather than ingesting or exposing anyone to them.
