For serious household illness or legal peril, the text gives a staffed communal rite:
- establish the zhai;
- assemble ritual officers in one of several group sizes;
- prepare a clean chamber;
- install the Three Treasures, incense, lamps and offerings;
- invite a Sandong fashi;
- select a particularly competent leader;
- conduct the Daoist service with the household patron;
- establish two high seats;
- one person proclaims sacred titles;
- other Daoists circumambulate in sequence;
- the lead chants buxu while those below move slowly;
- attend to the celestial soundscape described by the text;
- recite/turn the scripture for the sick person;
- continue petitions and exorcistic commands;
- a related passage describes six observance periods per day and night, with ritual practice, giving and contemplative recollection.
