Type: Calendrical/spatial taboo

Purpose

Section titled “Purpose”

Avoid movement or construction into a direction occupied by a dangerous/inauspicious directional deity.

Procedure

Section titled “Procedure”
  1. Before travel, construction or major activity, identify the intended date.
  2. Determine the direction from the relevant point of origin to the destination/worksite.
  3. Consult the calendrical/onmyōdō system for the positions of directional deities.
  4. Determine whether the direction is blocked/tabooed for that day/period.
  5. If safe, proceed.
  6. If tabooed, postpone or perform katatagae.

Learning

Historically this depended on onmyōji/calendar specialists. Researchers must learn the specific calendrical table rather than using a modern compass alone.
