Class: HISTORICAL GENDERED SACRED-SPACE BOUNDARY

Gorai’s Shugendō research argues that Kōyasan’s historical female-exclusion boundary changed over time.

  1. An earlier boundary likely began farther away near Amano/Middle Shrine.
  2. Later the boundary contracted.
  3. Nyonin-dō / Daimon became prominent markers.
  4. Oshiage-iwa is tied to later boundary lore.
  5. Women used routes and worship places around rather than within the prohibited zone.
