A Japanese study describes goma performed before yamabushi enter the mountain for training.
Documented spatial features
Section titled “Documented spatial features”- ritual boundary established in four directions;
- east associated with blue;
- west with white;
- south with red;
- north with black;
- one observed tradition added yellow as a fifth color;
- northeast treated as the demon gate (kimon);
- altar placed on the opposite side;
- altar oriented toward the principal mountain to be entered.
Ritual logic
Section titled “Ritual logic”The goma is therefore not merely “a bonfire before hiking.” It constructs a purified directional cosmos immediately before transition into the mountain training world.
