The seventy-two are not merely seventy-two artistic variants.
Surviving Japanese and Chinese transmission assigns individual talismans to distinct threats involving categories such as:
- household apparitions;
- quarrels and calamity;
- dead soldiers;
- livestock death;
- wind/fire anomalies;
- water/fire danger;
- illness and shortened lifespan;
- burglary;
- ominous stars;
- restless dead;
- dragons;
- uncanny dreams;
- malicious spirits.
