Japanese: 小反閇作法并護身法 / small henbai and self-protection method
Source state: OPEN SCHOLARLY TRANSCRIPTION OF WAKASUGI MATERIAL
Historical purpose: protection when going out / securing the body before departure
A scholarly transcription of the Wakasugi material preserves the following ordered sequence:
- Go toward the gate through which one is about to leave and state the matter to Gyokunyo 玉女.
- Contemplate the Five Qi, strike the “heavenly drum” three times, close the eyes and contemplate.
- Invitation/incantation (kanjō / kansei-shu depending reading).
- Heaven Gate Incantation.
- Earth Door Incantation.
- Gyokunyo Incantation.
- Sword-Prohibition / Sword-Control Incantation.
- Four-Vertical/Five-Horizontal Incantation together with its seal.
- Yubu / ancient sacred pacing.
- After the pacing, stop and recite the standing-still formula.
- Six Steps — secret teaching.
Functional interpretation
Section titled “Functional interpretation”The scholarly discussion explicitly characterizes the whole complex as a body-protection method for leaving home:
- invoke divine powers;
- protect the directions/body;
- trace the nine-syllable/four-vertical-five-horizontal seal;
- execute Yubu;
- complete with protective incantation.
Important historical distinction
Section titled “Important historical distinction”In this recension, walking and chanting are separate operations:
- perform the Yubu;
- then stop;
- then pronounce the formula.
Later descriptions sometimes merge chant and footwork.
