Mārīcī is an excellent example of layered learning.
Level 1: scripture/dhāraṇī
Section titled “Level 1: scripture/dhāraṇī”- Read the Mārīcī dhāraṇī.
- Learn its six related mantra/dhāraṇī formulas in their textual context.
- Recite with the protective intention given by the scripture.
Level 2: ritual manual
Section titled “Level 2: ritual manual”- Study Toh 565.
- Identify the ritual action required.
- Prepare the materials named for that action.
- Establish Mārīcī through the text’s visualization/mantra procedure.
- Perform the application.
- Close as prescribed.
Level 3: maṇḍala
Section titled “Level 3: maṇḍala”- Study Toh 566.
- Receive any required tantric authorization.
- Learn measurements, deity placement and entry procedure.
- Construct or visualize the maṇḍala.
- Perform offerings, mantra and the specific ritual action.
- Dismiss/dissolve and dedicate.
Learning lesson
Section titled “Learning lesson”Do not treat a deity’s short dhāraṇī as though it automatically grants competence in the deity’s kalpa or maṇḍala. These are different levels of ritual literacy.
