The tantra contains a section explicitly presented as mastering a vetāla.

Source-described architecture

It calls for:

1. obtaining a particular corpse;
2. removing and washing it;
3. placing it appropriately;
4. mantra-incanting it;
5. fearlessness on the part of the yogin;
6. an expected oracular/animated response in the ritual narrative.

Interpretation

This belongs to the historical Indian tantric corpse-ritual complex and should be compared with vetālas in Buddhist, Śaiva and narrative sources.

Modern boundary

Human remains are subject to law, consent, cultural patrimony and health rules. Preserve the textual procedure as history, not as instructions to obtain or manipulate a corpse.
