Historical purpose

The scripture names poisons, snakes, spirits and threatening beings in enormous catalogues and envelops them in a protective Buddhist speech-act.

Practical liturgical skeleton

1. Take refuge.
2. Establish the person/place to be protected.
3. Invoke Mahāmāyūrī.
4. Recite the relevant protective section and vidyā.
5. When following the full scripture, recite the enumerations of protective beings and dangerous classes as part of the ritual enclosure.
6. Request protection and longevity.
7. Dedicate.

Learning

The full Mahāmāyūrī is long. Learn it as liturgy, not as a replacement for antivenom or toxicology. For snakebite or poisoning, emergency medicine comes first; recitation can accompany care if desired.
